Having just moved interstate and in the midst of an entire style upheaval (transitioning from a Moroccan-inspired aesthetic to coastal chic), I was on the hunt for the perfect bed frame to complete my new beachside apartment.

I have to admit, there were a few non-negotiables: it had to be easy to construct, had to match the look/feel of my apartment and had to be comfortable enough for my 6’4” partner to sleep in. These might sound easy enough to achieve, but you’d be surprised.

That’s when I came across the SD Indestruct Bed Frame with Dual Beam C-Spine Support System* - it was sleek, came in a range of colours and was made of solid steel for back support’. I was hooked.

The hardest part was choosing the style (I opted for the Baker style) and the colour (Modern European Oak, a light brown timber that matched my side tables) but the rest of the process was really seamless.

HOW WE REVIEWED THE SLEEPING DUCK INDESTRUCT BED FRAME

At news.com.au checkout, it’s our mission to help you make informed shopping decisions. To ensure you buy the right product at the best price, we rigorously test products so you don’t have to. As well as sorting through mountains of consumer reviews, product manuals and conducting thorough product research, our team of expert writers puts each product we review through a series of hands-on tests to ensure we give you honest feedback about its performance and whether it’s worth your hard-earned money.

To properly test the SD Indestruct Bed Frame, we made it as close to the customer experience as possible — ordering it online, getting it delivered and assembling it ourselves. We also tested how supportive and comfortable it was for a couple with different sleeping styles.

WHAT WAS DELIVERY LIKE?

I do want to give a special shout out to the customer support team here as the communication was fantastic - they called me a few days before delivery to confirm what time was best for me (morning or afternoon slot). They sent me another text on the morning of delivery and then gave me a bell once they had arrived. They were friendly, on-time and a delight to deal with.

HOW EASY IS IT TO ASSEMBLE?

In terms of the actual construction of the bed frame, I was given the choice of having the unit put together by the SD team or tackling the project myself. Having been told it was pretty straightforward to construct (and knowing my partner would be home, happy to help), I decided to take on the challenge of putting all 213cm x 158cm x 106cm (L x W x H) of the queen Indestruct together myself.

The frame comes with a simple step-by-step manual and (even for someone as impatient as me) was really easy to follow. For full transparency, my partner did stick around for the whole construction process and having an extra pair of hands made all the difference. While I’m sure it’s possible to put the SD frame together by yourself, I’d strongly suggest an additional pair of hands - even if it’s just for a bit of extra muscle.

While the kit does include an allen/hex key, we sped up the process a little and used a screwdriver we already had on hand. The whole process took us around an hour to complete and we only made one little fumble along the way (hot tip: ensure you pay particular attention to which side the steel panels should be facing before screwing the bolts in).

HOW SUPPORTIVE AND COMFORTABLE IS IT?

I’ve found the real point of difference in this bed frame is the solid steel chassis (with built in Dual C-Spine Support Beams), as you can really feel the difference in the level of support it offers your mattress.

My favourite part of the whole set up is the bed head (made of high strength poplar plywood structure with a European Ash veneer). There’s something about a nice bed head that really pulls a room together and this one feels like the perfect combination of simple and stylish.

HOW MUCH DOES THE SD BED FRAME COST?

This bed frame in queen will set you back $2099 (plus delivery). The frame and entire support system comes with a lifetime warranty, while the rest of the bed has a short-term warranty — full details here.

In terms of delivery, both the Baker and Boyd ranges are available in all standard metropolitan delivery areas. However the Haussman, Palais and Seaspray ranges are only available in what they call their premium delivery areas.

You can also choose from standard delivery (free), premium delivery where they’ll deliver the frame straight to your room and unpack the mattress for you ($99) or the premium Plus delivery where the delivery team will assemble the set up for you ($199).

For an extra $99 the team will even remove your old mattress in the same trip.

IS THE SD BED FRAME WORTH IT?

In my opinion the SD Indestruct Frame is absolutely worth it. As someone who is constantly on the lookout for the perfect dupe and a great sale, there are only two things I won’t skimp on - my bedroom set-up and my sneakers. When you think of how much time we spend in our beds (on average 25 years of your life), it’s definitely worth investing in the right set-up.
