Daydreaming of a good night’s sleep? Finding the best mattress for your body can be a nightmare, from choosing the right firmness to picking the correct materials and technology for your needs.
That’s why we asked Olivia Arezzolo, sleep coach and author, for her top tips on shopping for a new mattress. Two of Origin’s sleep experts, Dr Eilish Roche and Dr. Mark Enriquez D.C, also shared their expertise.
“If we are sleeping on a mattress that leaves us uncomfortable, tossing and turning all night, this is just as bad as not sleeping at all, as sleep depth is just as important as sleep length,” Olivia told news.com.au.
“As such, we may experience the side effects of inadequate sleep when sleeping on a mattress which is not suitable (or old), such as fatigue, memory loss, brain fog, poor concentration, anxiety, and feelings of depression.”
Dr Eilish added poor co-ordination and slow reaction times to the list, which can happen due to changes to our sleep pattern and cycle, irregular sleep times due to work schedules, or simply not having enough sleep.
“Sleeping is a vital component to our body’s healing process,” she said.
Looking for a good deal? There are a few dreamy discounts currently on offer, including the the Origin Hybrid Mattress, currently $175.80 off ($703.20, down from $879) that shoppers “absolutely love”.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN BUYING A MATTRESS
Switching to the right mattress can improve sleep up to 55 per cent, and significantly lower stress levels, according to a recent study in Journal of Orthopaedics and Traumatology. To help your research, we evaluated several factors our experts believe are the most important:
Breathable materials and temperature regulating features
Breathable materials and features that promote maximum airflow and wick away moisture are particularly useful for people who tend to get warm during the night. This can include cooling gels, latex foam and springs.
Olivia said finding a temperature regulating, breathable mattress that keeps you cool while you sleep is “critical” because it “ensures optimal production of melatonin, our sleepiness hormone, which in turn, helps you sleep deeper”.
“Maintaining your core body temperature also helps increase slow sleep waves, which allows us to stay asleep for longer,” Dr Eilish added.
Firmness
If you’re regularly waking up with a stiff back or lose sleep due to physical discomfort, recent studies point to medium firm mattresses as the way to go.
“Regardless of if you have back pain or not, the primary role of your mattress is to support spinal alignment, and in doing so, you have the greatest capacity to sleep well,” Olivia said.
Features to minimise partner disturbance
Spring mattresses aren’t the best for couples or light sleepers because it offers the least motion isolation. If this is something you’re worried about, Olivia suggests memory foam and other mattresses that promote ‘zero partner disturbance’.
Long warranty
Look for mattresses with a generous warranty, such as one with at least 10 years. “If a mattress is of a high quality, it will have a considerable warranty period,” Olivia said.
Trial period
A a lengthy trial period, ideally more than 100 days, and is risk free (i.e. “no questions asked” if you decide to return it) is a great way to make sure you’re getting the best mattress for you. It gives you an opportunity to test the mattress exactly how you would use it in the long run, while the extended period gives your body enough time to adjust to the new surface.
HOW WE CHOOSE PRODUCTS
To help you find the best mattress for your needs and budget, we asked Olivia Arezzolo, sleep coach and author, and Origin sleep experts Dr Eilish Roche and Dr. Mark Enriquez D.C, for their expert advice and recommendations on what to look for when buying a mattress. In addition, our shopping team read hundreds of customer reviews and looked at test results and ratings from product review sites to find the best mattress from premium to budget to help you find the right one.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF MATTRESSES?
With so many options to choose from, here’s what you can expect from some of the most popular types of mattresses.
• Hybrid mattresses: Hybrid mattresses are Dr Mark’s number one pick because they’re suitable for most body types and sleeping positions, plus isolate movement and adapt to body contours really well. This type of mattress also usually combines latex and memory foams, giving you a greater range of benefits. However, hybrid options tend to be expensive.
• Memory foam mattresses: Dr Mark says memory foam is the “best for adapting to body contours” and offers the “most pressure relief”. It also traps heat and, unlike coil mattresses, isolatesmovement to prevent that ‘waterbed’ type feel.If you’re a hot sleeper, gel-infused foam is an ideal alternative.
• Latex foam mattresses mattress: Organic latex mattresses may be pricey, but Dr Mark recommends latex mattresses for hot sleepers due to their good cooling properties.
• Coil mattresses: contain metal springs that provide a durable surface and helps the mattress easily return to its original shape. These are generally more affordable and come in different styles, including Bonnell coils, offset coils, pocketed coils and continuous wire coils. On the downside, coil mattresses typically produce more motion transfer.
• Innerspring mattresses: Dr Mark recommends innerspring mattresses for heavier sleepers. These are cheaper and bouncier to other mattress types, but don’t ‘cradle’ the contour of the body well.
Most mattresses are designed to suit all sleeping positions, although you can find some tailored for certain sleeping styles. “What is right for me is not necessarily right for you, and there is no one size fits all. Rather, it depends on your sleeping profile (front, back, side), body size, and desired firmness,” Olivia explained.
Whether you’re trialing a new mattress or finding your current one is starting to feel uncomfortable, here are some things to consider:
• Side sleepers: make sure your shoulders and hips don’t sink into the mattress, otherwise it creates unnecessary strain on your neck. “It is important to keep your neck and low back supported while you sleep,” Dr Eilish said.
• Back sleepers: “Check your mid spine and pelvis aren’t sinking into the mattress while your knees and upper back feel rigid and unable to get comfortable,” Dr Eilish added.
• Back sleepers: While it’s difficult to control our sleeping positions while we’re asleep, Dr Eilish suggests trying to “avoid sleeping on your stomach” since it can put “unnecessary strain on your spine and musculature, which may lead to waking with aches and pains”.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU CHANGE YOUR MATTRESS?
Our sleep experts suggest mattresses typically last between seven to 10 years before it needs to be replaced. But the type and quality of the mattress, among other factors, may mean you need to change it sooner.
SIGNS YOU NEED A NEW MATTRESS
Aside from time, there are other things to keep in mind when using a mattress.
“A common complaint I see are people who wake up regularly with aches, pains and stiffness. This definitely is a telltale sign to switch to a new mattress,” Dr Mark said.
Here are several other signs:
- Regularly wake up with a sore body, muscle tension or generalised low back stiffness.
- It’s more comfortable to sleep somewhere else, such as the couch or spare bed.
- Middle of the mattress sags more than the outer parts of the bed.
- Mattress makes squeaky sounds whenever there is movement.
- No longer feel refreshed when you wake up.
- Constantly wake up during the night and struggle to fall asleep.
- Experience more allergy or asthma symptoms.
“[W]hat you sleep on matters,” Dr Mark said.
“Poor mattresses often cause a lot of discomfort and difficulty falling asleep or getting good quality sleep, which in turn affects your physical and mental health,” he explained. Aside from the usual aches and pains, Mark mentioned poor quality sleep can lead to a variety of concerns such as a weakened immunity or poor recovery, an increased risk of developing health issues including heart disease and diabetes, forgetfulness and reduced concentration.
Also keep in mind that finding a suitable pillow is just as important as getting the right mattress for your body. Dr Eilish recommends getting fitted with the correct height pillow: “Using a pillow that is the incorrect height will cause unnecessary strain on your neck, causing you to wake with aches and pains.”
MATTRESS VS FLOOR: WHICH IS BETTER?
Sleeping on a mattress is prevalent throughout Western countries, with many people citing ample cushioning; elevation from floor bacteria and dust; and the warmth afforded bodies during colder months as definitive reasons for opting for mattresses over sleeping on the floor.
However, there are many households the world over that will choose a mat on the ground over a mattress on a bed frame. Anecdotal benefits refer to optimum support of the spine and the increased mobility that is permitted when one is not hugged by a plush mattress.
