While you may not usually associate the word “cooling” with the word “blanket”, the concept sounds like a dream come true.

Sometimes you want to have the comfort of a cover – without locking in the heat of a traditional blanket. Maybe you want to cool down quickly on a hot summer’s day or after an intensive gym workout. Or maybe you’re a hot sleeper and want to regulate your body temperature to sleep more peacefully.

The amazing cooling blanket does all of the above. With fabric specifically designed to feel cool against your skin, the cooling blanket absorbs heat and moisture so you stay cool, calm and collected, not just during the warmer months but anytime you find yourself overheating.

Our top picks? The Oodie have just released an excellent Cooling Blanket that is both “cool to the touch” and “soft on your skin” – read our review here.

We also love the Elegear Cooling Blanket that over 19k swear by - saying it’s given them the “best sleep in months” and “works like magic”. Our Partnerships Writer Susannah Hardy also put it to the test, describing it as “incredible” and “keeps me relaxed and super chilled out”.

We’ve gone through multiple cooling blankets and identified the ones that will genuinely help cool things down. So keep reading and get ready to chill out over summer (and the many months that follow).

TRIED AND TESTED

Elegear Cooling Blanket

Tried and Tested by Susannah Hardy, Partnerships Writer

As a hot sleeper, I’ve been increasingly curious about cooling blankets and their meteoric rise in popularity. So recently I tried out the Elegear Cooling Comforter, which is a huge seller on Amazon. And I’m very glad I did.

The first thing you notice is that the fabric actually feels cool to the touch. I don’t know how they do it, but it’s incredible. You just want to snuggle under it immediately, even on a hot day. Plus, it’s super soft and silky against the skin. I tried the queen size which I found ample for one person, either on the bed or as a cover on the couch. The colour is a subtle grey which blends fairly smoothly with my decor.

As I said I sleep hot, but I also like to have a quilt or sheet over the top of me for comfort and creating a sense of calm. However on certain nights, this can make me too hot and sweaty. This cooling blanket is a great solution - a comfy cosy covering yet with cooling properties to regulate my body temperature.

It’s also perfect for snuggling up on the sofa, particularly in summer. The other night I had a shower and put on my pyjamas and then jumped under the blanket to watch TV and it was perfect. Warm, comfy and calming without being too hot.

And it’s not only me who has fallen for this magic blanket. My 13 year-old daughter loved it the minute she felt it. She does a lot of dance and at the end of the day, it calms her down without overheating. I’ve also found our dog lying on it on hot days. And fair enough, this blanket is truly amazing. I’m looking forward to trying it out next winter as I tend to overheat under the heavier doona. But in the meantime, while the Sydney weather is warm, it’s keeping me (my daughter and dog) relaxed and super chilled out.

Ailemei Direct Cooling Throw Blanket, $100.70 at Amazon Australia

What You Need To Know

Calling all hot and sweaty sleepers – this popular cooling blanket is the key to not waking up in a sweat. Made from a combination of Japanese cold fibres, mica nylon and rayon, it features a double-sided cooling technology that wicks away heat and lowers your internal temperature by 2°C. It’s lightweight and breathable, machine washable and boasts over 7,000 five-star ratings.

“Bought it for my husband. We were sceptical but decided to try it out based on the reviews. Glad we did, because it actually works! The cloth is cool to the touch, thin but has a bit of weight to it. Good for people who don’t like to sleep uncovered but get too hot or sweaty

“This changed my life. Was I sceptical? Absolutely. Was I at my wits end? Obviously. Was I like take my money? 100% I couldn’t sleep because I was so hot. I put the blanket on and I was honestly a little disappointed it felt like a regular blanket … I woke a couple hours later but not to the blazing heat. Oh no not the heat. I was literally so cold I had to go get a hoodie. I kid you not … My boyfriend is thrilled by this purchase and uses it nightly now. So does this work? Oh yes, I believe so. Everyone may find a different outcome but I award this magic blanket a cool 5 stars,” another wrote.

PHF Double Cooling Blanket, $81.66 (down from $96.11) at Amazon Australia

What You Need To Know

Made from the latest cooling technology, the Arc-Chill Q-Max>0.5, this doubled sided nylon cooling blanket not only absorbs your body heat and reduces the temperature by 2-5°C but it also dissipates heat and moisture to keep you cool and dry throughout the night.

It can stay cool for up to 10 hours and is machine washable for easy upkeep.

Boasting a 4.6-star rating, reviewers say it “really works” and is “perfect for summer”.

“If you’d told me a month ago that a human being could fall in love with a blanket, I’d have said you were a nutter, but here we are. FINALLY, a product that does what it claims to do! … If you are hot-natured, this blanket will cool you delightfully. I’m beyond grateful I found it!” one reviewer wrote.

“Couldn’t wrap my head around a blanket that actually cooks, but this one does. The box it arrived in was heavy, so I was sceptical, but the fabric is like nothing I have felt before. This blanket actually keeps you cool. My only complaint … the material is slippery and it slides around on the bed easily, but it does keep us cool. We sleep hot in Florida. Bought one for my son as well,” another wrote.

The Oodie Cooling Blanket, $139 at The Oodie

Tried and Tested by Erin Doyle, eCommerce Writer

Confession: I love sleeping. Whether it’s falling into a deep slumber for hours on end, napping on the couch, beach, a hammock or anywhere else I can manage to get horizontal, I’ve always been a big fan of quality shut eye.

However, when it comes to summer, there’s a bit of a dilemma. You see, my friends, I am what they call a “hot sleeper”. When the peak heat of December and January rolls around, I often find myself tossing and turning at night struggling to stay cool and comfortable.

So when I had the chance to give the new Oodie Cooling Blanket a go, I was keen to see whether this could be the solution I was looking for to say sayonara to sleepless summer nights.

Designed to keep you cool, the Oodie Cooling Blanket promises a lot in its marketing. The blanket is described as being “three times cooler than cotton” and “cool to touch” as well as promising to “regulate temperature”. This is all thanks to the materials used to make the blanket – 90% nylon and 10% elastane. It’s also filled with polyester for insulation, which adds softness without the risk of overheating the body. Luckily for Oodie, (and for me!) these claims all appear to ring true in my experience. It’s also compact and lightweight and can roll up and fit back into its canvas tote bag, making it the perfect camping companion (we all know how hot those tents can get!). This also means you can easily transport to wherever you want to use it.

If you’re a hot sleeper and getting forty winks with nothing but a sheet as your current go-to solution, this is a switch you should make. The Oodie blanket genuinely does cool you down and feels nice on your skin while you’re getting some shut eye. I never would have thought of using this as a post-workout product had I not read about it on their website but I surprised myself by actually enjoying it for this purpose. For travelling, especially camping in hot locations, I think it is a no-brainer to buy and even as a couch blanket, it is a welcome addition.

“Feels like a hug. The blanket has a nice weight to it being so thin. The surface is pleasantly cooling and silky to touch. I washed it on delicate cycle and hung to dry. Not sure how much it does at removing heat but it doesn’t make me sweat more than I would with a usual blanket,” one five-star reviewer wrote.

“This is legit the best comforter I’ve ever owned. It’s lightweight so it doesn’t sleep hot at all. It’s also beautiful! And super soft. It’s holding up to dogs laying on it and being washed. WHAT TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A COOLING BLANKET

We took the following factors into consideration when selecting the cooling blankets for this list:

Material

Fabric is everything when it comes to a cooling blanket as it needs to have special properties to absorb heat and moisture, leaving you comfortable and sweat-free underneath.

Weight

While cooling blankets are generally not heavy, you still want to have enough weight to calm you as well as cool you down. The weight you choose depends on how you want to use it. A thin and lightweight option is easier to take on holidays or camping trips, while a thicker quilt version might be cosier over the winter months.

Feel

A cooling blanket should feel cool to the touch – and as it’s something you’re putting close to your skin, you also want it to feel soft and soothing.

Moisture wicking

In order to be effective, you need your cooling blanket to be breathable and able to absorb sweat and moisture so you stay dry and comfortable all night long.

Price

Cooling blankets vary in price, ranging from approximately $35 to over $200 – so look for one that suits your budget.

Size

Cooling blankets do not always come in exact bedding sizes, so always check measurements otherwise you might end up with a blanket that doesn’t quite cover your bed.

Care

Check washing instructions as it you may prefer a cooling blanket that is completely machine washable.

HOW WE CHOOSE OUR PRODUCTS

To help you find the best cooling blanket to suit your lifestyle, the news.com.au checkout team read hundreds of customer reviews, while also looking at test results and ratings from product review sites. We also tested products when possible and included personal reviews.
