Confession: I love sleeping. Whether it’s falling into a deep slumber for hours on end, napping on the couch, beach, a hammock or anywhere else I can manage to get horizontal, I’ve always been a big fan of quality shut eye.
However, when it comes to summer, there’s a bit of a dilemma. You see, my friends, I am what they call a “hot sleeper”. When the peak heat of December and January rolls around, I often find myself tossing and turning at night struggling to stay cool and comfortable.
So when I had the chance to give the new Oodie Cooling Blanket a go, I was keen to see whether this could be the solution I was looking for to say sayonara to sleepless summer nights.
Oodie Cooling Blanket, $119 at The Oodie
How We Tested This
To put the cooling blanket through its paces in a number of scenarios, I swapped my cotton sheets for the Oodie and slept with it every night for a little less than a week. I also used it as a couch blanket while watching TV on several hot nights. And, as one of the suggestions for use on its website was after workouts, I also tested its ability to cool me down after a sweaty HIIT session by draping it over my shoulders.
The Oodie Cooling Blanket’s Features and Design
Designed to keep you cool, the Oodie Cooling Blanket promises a lot in its marketing. The blanket is described as being “three times cooler than cotton” and “cool to touch” as well as promising to “regulate temperature”. This is all thanks to the materials used to make the blanket – 90% nylon and 10% elastane. It’s also filled with polyester for insulation, which adds softness without the risk of overheating the body. Luckily for Oodie, (and for me!) these claims all appear to ring true in my experience.
It’s also compact and lightweight and can roll up and fit back into its canvas tote bag, making it the perfect camping companion (we all know how hot those tents can get!). This also means you can easily transport to wherever you want to use it.
A word of warning when it comes to the material, however. While the use of 90% nylon and 10% elastane helps it feel cool and lightweight, these materials are also highly flammable so ensure the blanket is kept away from high heat whether it’s a heater or fire or anything else that might threaten to help it go up in flames.
Experience Using The Oodie Cooling Blanket
As someone who does find themselves getting a little toasty during the warmer months, the Oodie Cooling Blanket was a nice addition to my bedding. It does what it says on the box. I.e. it does feel cooling and like it promises, it’s instantly “cool to touch” and feels soft. On the nights I slept with it, I didn’t need to slip half a leg out from under the blanket in order to regulate my body heat in the middle of the night like I’ve done before with heavier blankets. And it did feel quite a lot cooler than the cotton sheets I often switch to to make it through the blistering summer heat.
However, the blanket itself was smaller than I expected. As it comes in single size, it didn’t stretch across to cover my entire queen-sized bed. I road-tested it solo but had I been sharing the bed with a partner, I don’t think it would have been suitable for two people, particularly if one – or both – of them are prone to tossing and turning during the night.
As a couch blanket however, it was a star. It was the perfect size for lounging around on the couch. I liked that it replicated that cosy and snuggly vibe that is fun in winter months and rainy nights but the “cooling” aspect made it suitable for warmer weather. I can see myself whipping this out for couch use a lot over summer. If I go camping, I will also definitely pack this.
I also tested the Oodie Cooling Blanket as a post-workout product. After a high-intensity work out, I usually feel a bit hot and stuffy entering my apartment with my body heat sky high and my heart pumping after all that calorie-incinerating exercise. Draping the cooling blanket over my shoulders and wrapping myself up like a blanket burrito did genuinely make me feel a lot cooler and relaxed as I wound down following a sweaty HIIT session.
The Oodie Cooling Blanket’s Look and Feel
The Oodie Cooling Blanket I tested was the “Sapphire Emerald” option, which was a double-sided blanket. On one side, it was navy blue while the other was a more vibrant sky blue hue. There are two other colours available: Grey or Lilac Pastel Wave (which is now sold out, so get in quick for the remaining options).
Thanks to its use of nylon and the bright colours, the design reminds me slightly of sleeping bags for camping. That kind of style is fine for a couch blanket, a post-workout product or for travelling and camping but realistically, I wouldn’t use it everyday as a blanket on my bed. If they had a range of colours that better suited my existing bedding’s more muted colour scheme, I may be more inclined to add it as a permanent summer fixture.
I do love how surprisingly soft the Oodie Cooling Blanket feels against my skin though and I can’t overstate how lightweight this blanket feels, which is a big plus.
How Much is the Oodie Cooling Blanket?
To buy an Oodie Cooling blanket (in any of the colours available), it will cost you $119.
Verdict - Is The Oodie Cooling Blanket Worth Buying?
More Coverage
If you’re a hot sleeper and getting forty winks with nothing but a sheet as your current go-to solution, this is a switch you should make. The Oodie blanket genuinely does cool you down and feels nice on your skin while you’re getting some shut eye. I never would have thought of using this as a post-workout product had I not read about it on their website but I surprised myself by actually enjoying it for this purpose. For travelling, especially camping in hot locations, I think it is a no-brainer to buy and even as a couch blanket, it is a welcome addition. However, if you’re a couple who are both hot sleepers, maybe buy two if you want to avoid fights in bed.
