EDITOR’S PICKS: BEST SHEETS
Jude Organic Cotton Sheet Set in Ink, $420 at Sheet Society
Tried and Tested by Troy Nankervis, news.com.au checkout Shopping Writer
It’s been a while since I’ve had new sheets and I was quite excited to try these out.
Thankfully, Sheet Society has delivered the goods.
The Aussie brand’s Jude Organic Cotton Sheet Set won me over from the moment I opened the box, largely because this sheet set is pre-washed and comes ready to go.
I have a pretty busy lifestyle and this was a big selling point for me, I definitely didn’t want to spend an extra day or two washing this sheet set before use. So this was a big tick for me.
The Jude sheets come with a thread count of 300, and while the quality is technically considered mid-range (sheets can have up to a 600 thread count), the organic cotton has a lovely feel, and a luxurious look. The fabric itself is not too heavy which was an important selling point for me.
The sheets are buttery-soft and they feel literally like hotel sheets. Sleeping on them has been super comfortable, the organic cotton is breathable and I’ve found that I haven’t been overheating.
There’s an end-of-bed marker on the fitted sheet, which tells you which side it needs to go, and the stretchy elastic on the fitted sheet is also very high quality, and I didn’t have any experience of it riding up the sides of the mattress.
There’s a nice matte finish on the sheets too which gives a great modern look, and the quality of the stitching and seams is also excellent.
I particularly like the little details and inclusions like the neatly placed Sheet Society Logos.
The pillow cases are huge with a neat pocket to tuck in your pillow, and the flat sheet has a neat folded top edge. These are all very small details, but they all add up.
I also liked that Sheet Society let me build and tailor the sheet set to my liking, with different sizing options for the pillowcases (standard, king, european or body pillowcases).
The quilt cover, which is zip up, is optional if you only want the sheets and pillowcases, however I have been equally impressed with this one.
In terms of colour options, the range on offer is good, and I went for the Ink, which is a lovely dark blue and grey blend. I chose this because I like darker colours for sheets, and it nicely matched the other furniture in my bedroom.
The pricing is reasonable and a tad higher than entry level options, the $245 you’d spend for the sheets and pillowcases is worth the investment, and if you wanted to add on the quilt cover, you’re looking at $420 which I believe is great value.
There’s also a trial period for the sheets, and you can send these back within 30-days if you’re unhappy. However, I’ll confidently be hanging onto these ones.
I’m really impressed with the Jude Organic Cotton Sheet Set, these look good and feel great. My biggest decision is now what colour to pick next.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN BUYING SHEETS
The best type of material depends on personal preference, although there are a few factors that affect how comfortable your bed sheet will be and how well it will fit. These include:
Standard fit – despite having a variety of bedding sizes, such as queen and single, not all mattresses have the same depth. If you have a particularly thick mattress, it’s a good idea to find a generously-sized bed sheet with pockets deep enough to fit a 40 centimetre deep wall.
Breathability – whether you’re a hot sleeper or not, it’s always handy to find bed sheets that promote airflow and regular temperature. This helps prevent you from overheating and sweating during the night. Some materials, such as bamboo, are naturally breathable. Organic cotton sheets are also a good option for breathability.
Percale or sateen – Percale sheets have a plain or basket weave, which makes the bed sheets light, crisp and durable. Sateen sheets use as a different weave pattern that causes the fabric to feel very smooth and slightly heavier.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT IS THREAD COUNT?
Thread count refers to the number of thread strands per square inch of fabric. The term doesn’t actually reflect the quality of the threads, which is why a bed sheet with a 400 thread count can feel much softer than a product made with a 1,000 thread count.
But according to Sealy Posturepedic, a good benchmark for most fabrics is a thread count between 200 and 600. The brand says higher thread counts are typically more expensive but don’t offer that much difference in terms of softness.
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A FLAT SHEET AND FITTED SHEET?
Many bed sheet sets come with both flat and fitted sheets, with the flat sheet typically intended to be placed between you and the blanket to keep you and your duvet or blanket clean. But many people now use the flat sheet as an alternative to a fitted sheet.
Flat bed sheets are rectangular have a simple rectangular design that fold completely flat. These are usually tucked under the mattress by hand, rather than held in place by an elastic band or sewn corners like fitted sheets.
The corner pockets on fitted sheets prevents the bed sheet from after a night of tossing and turning, while flat sheets aren’t as secure.
