There’s nothing worse than the closure of your favourite store at your local shopping centre.
A number of big names have shut up shop since the start of the pandemic, including Myer at Knox and Target at Waverley Gardens.
These are some of the well-known outlets no longer operating.
MYER KNOX
The beloved department store is now in the process of being demolished after closing its doors last year, after more than 40 years at Knox City Shopping Centre.
When announcing the store’s closure, Myer said: “In making this decision, we have taken into account our rising online sales, as well as the number of Myer stores that are in proximity to the Knox store including Eastland, Fountain Gate, Chadstone and Frankston.”
A new Aldi and Woolworths are set to open in a refurbished Westfield Knox.
TARGET WAVERLEY GARDENS
The popular Target store shut its doors at the Mulgrave shopping centre last year, after more than 40 years of trading.
It was one of a number of Target stores to be converted into Kmarts last year, including stores in Epping and Doncaster.
Popular fruit and vegetable store Henrys Mercato is set to be part of a huge new fresh food precinct at the centre.
BIG W FOREST HILL, BOX HILL CENTRAL
The popular discount store closed at Forest Hill Chase back in 2018, but shoppers still miss it.
The store, which had been at the centre since 1997, was hugely popular with customers.
Stores at Box Hill Central and Broadmeadows also closed last year.
The closures were part of a dramatic overhaul Big W announced in 2019, which resulted in 30 outlets and two distribution centres shutting.
SPORTSGIRL CAMBERWELL, THE GLEN
Fashion fans were dealt a blow when the popular chain closed stores in Burke Rd Camberwell and The Glen shopping centre last year.
The flagship store in Camberwell was put up for lease in early 2021.
AUSSIE DISPOSALS
Fans of popular camping chain Aussie Disposals were left shattered at news the business would close 11 of its 36 stores after going into voluntary administration in 2020.
The 58-year-old retail chain placed itself into voluntary administration as part of a restructure which was set to result in close to one in three stores closing.
KMART BRANDON PARK
Kmart at Brandon Park Shopping Centre officially closed its doors to the public after 38 years earlier this month, despite a passionate community campaign to save it.
After being an integral part of the Wheelers Hill centre for decades, first opening its doors in 1983, the store closed to customers on January 8.
THE REJECT SHOP THE GLEN, STUD PARK
Bargain hunters were disappointed when the popular chain closed stores at The Glen and Stud Park Shopping Centre in Rowville last year.
Vicinity Centres regional manager Andria Carniato said it understood some customers would be disappointed to see the store close at The Glen.
“We see this as an opportunity for our team to work with other retailers to fill this space and this is part of our business as usual at a shopping centre,” Ms Carniato said.
