Target Waverley Gardens: Retailer to shut doors after decades in the centre

A favourite Aussie brand is about to shut its doors at Waverley Gardens after decades at the centre.

A much-loved retailer at Waverley Gardens shopping centre will shut its doors after being opened for decades.

Target at Waverley Gardens shopping centre in Mulgrave, which opened in the late 70s, will shut its doors on April 10.

The Leader has told been told management informed staff members on Tuesday about the closure, with the store offering to redeploy as many workers as possible.

The much-loved retailer has undergone several refurbishments over the years and even included a home and garden section in the early 90s.

The closest Target stores will be at The Glen and Dandenong Plaza.

A Target spokeswoman said the company wanted to thank its Waverly Gardens team, the local community and all of our customers for shopping with them over the years.

“Our focus is on supporting our team through this time as we work through achieving their desired outcomes for the future whether that is in suitable redeployment within other Wesfarmers businesses as well as with other local employers or accessing their entitlements for any permanent team members,” the spokeswoman said.

It comes only weeks after the retail giant announced Target at Pakenham Place would shut its doors in June to make way for a long-awaited centre revamp.

Last year, Target at Casey Central shut its doors with a Kmart taking its place.

Wesfarmers, which owns both Kmart and Target, also revealed plans last year to close shops and convert a further 92 of the struggling department stores to its booming Kmart brand.

Target and Waverley Gardens shopping centre have been contacted for comment.
