A much-loved retailer at Pakenham Place shopping centre will shut its doors amid a major centre redevelopment.

Target at Pakenham Place will shut its doors in June to make way for a long-awaited centre revamp, which the Leader understands will include several new retailers and eateries.

It’s understood Target will try and redeploy more than 50 team members to nearby stores.

The closest Target store will be at Westfield Fountain Gate, forcing locals to travel at least 20km.

A Target spokeswoman confirmed the closure, saying the retail giant thanked the Pakenham team, the local community and all of its customers for shopping with them over the years.

“Our focus is on supporting our team through this time as we work through achieving their desired outcomes for the future whether that is in suitable redeployment within other Wesfarmers businesses as well as with other employers in town or accessing their entitlements for any permanent team members,” the spokeswoman said.

Hundreds of Pakenham residents have taken to Facebook slamming the closure saying it was “disappointing”.

“We will now have to travel at least half an hour to visit our nearest Target, it’s annoying,” one woman wrote.

While other shoppers said they “hoped” a Kmart would take its place.

Last year, Target at Casey Central shut its doors with a Kmart taking its place.

Wesfarmers, which owns both Kmart and Target, also revealed plans last year to close shops and convert a further 92 of the struggling department stores to its booming Kmart brand.
