Details about confirmed and rumoured cuts from within Premier Campbell Newman's portfolio.
Cuts already confirmed by government
Smart State, $450,000 a year:
Premier Campbell Newman announced on July 22 the government would not renew the trademarks for "Queensland the Smart State" and "the Smart State", a move that would save $5400 per trademark plus $18,000 per trademark each month. It followed Transport Minister Scott Emerson's decision to stop manufacturing optional "Smart State" vehicle number plates in a bid to save $15,000 a year.
June temporary contract cuts, 3000 workers:
Following union warnings about the last workday in June being “Black Friday” due to the non-renewal of thousands of temporary contracts, Premier Campbell Newman confirmed the total size of the public service shrunk by nearly 3000 workers. Mr Newman said there were 198,944 full-time equivalent employees for the fortnight ending July 13, down from 201,934 the previous fortnight. However, he said the number was likely to rise again when casual teachers were re-employed for the start of the new school term.
Corporate boxes:
Mr Newman announced on April 11 the government would relinquish corporate hospitality boxes at stadiums and entertainment venues. The boxes would be relinquished or hired to private users.
Premier’s Literary Awards, $244,000:
Mr Newman announced on April 3 he was scrapping the Queensland Premier's Literary Awards to save more than $244,000 a year.
