A simple beach cafe gets all sophisticated by night, surprising diners with serious grown-up options (and pleasantly generous portions). The food is clean and modern, and speaks with a strong Asian accent. Anything deep-fried is worth a try, from just-crisped bug and prawn spring rolls to big, chunky, hand-cut chips that reveal steamy potato within a golden skin. Crumbed scallops get a lift with tomato and chilli aioli; sand whiting is served in a crisp batter with both aioli and nam jim dipping sauces; while deliciously crisp, roasted, rice-crusted hapuku comes on a bed of eggplant with tomato sambal, peanut and coriander pesto. Crisp-skin duck was a tad fatty but a contrastingly sharp sugar plum sauce keeps it in balance. Desserts are mainly European in inclination, but Asia stays in the frame in a refreshing dish of tapioca with mango pieces in a rich, sweet palm sugar syrup, topped with silky smooth coconut cream. It's a great little local, for grown-ups and juniors alike.
