Skilled refugees could unlock $9b in extra GDP

Syrian refugee Wissam Chabo applied for more than 100 jobs within months of arriving in Australia in November 2016. But the only job the then-25-year-old maths graduate could get was a server role at a local cafe.

“It was disheartening,” said Mr Chabo, 33, who had already accrued three years experience working for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Syria.
