Ruling on leave adds $1m to one business’ costs in a stroke

Employers are urging state governments to narrow rules allowing construction workers to earn long service leave from different employers, after landmark court rulings raised the prospect that other types of businesses could also be liable.

Australian Industry Group chief executive Innes Willox warned the vague scope of a Victorian portable LSL scheme was causing “major costs risks” for employers, who could be liable for millions of dollars in backpay.
