Labor’s portable leave scheme stymied by long service leave

Employers across the country could face higher costs for long service leave or workers could lose out on benefits if the Albanese government proceeds with a promise to develop portable leave schemes.

Experts say if the Albanese government moves forward with nationalising portable leave schemes in industries such as construction, cleaning and security, it will first have to tackle the thorny and decades-deferred problem of harmonising the states’ raft of conflicting long service leave entitlements.
