One of any leader’s toughest jobs is managing an employee who believes, often with justification, that they are more skilled than their boss.

If there was one exchange that demonstrated the depth of Monique Ryan’s problem with her star adviser, Sally Rugg, it was a misfired attempt, on a Sunday morning last year, to discuss the office Christmas party.

At 8.40am on November 27, the independent MP sent her small staff a message calling for a quick meeting to discuss, among other things, what each person planned to bring to their celebration the following week.
