Alarm as girls fall further behind in maths

A gender gulf in mathematics in Australian children is among the worst in the world and is being exacerbated as girls lose confidence in their ability to do even basic calculations in the earliest years of school.
An international assessment of maths and science abilities of children aged 10 and 14 has found that by year 4, Australian girls are the second-worst performers out of the 57 countries that participated.
