As the ASX suffered its biggest one-day fall in five years, some retail investors did something you might not expect: they leaned into the turmoil, loading up on equities as many professional fund managers sold down.

Among them was 30-year-old Sydney communications specialist Amy Cahill, a “rookie” investor with a $20,000 portfolio.
