Older, ‘cheaper’ houses hide costs that bite owners

More than 80 per cent of Australia’s houses have less than half the energy efficiency rating of the latest building codes, putting their owners at an increasing disadvantage as buyers seek homes with higher standards.

“For owners with lower rankings today, their property is worth less than they think it is,” Real Estate Institute of Australia director Jacob Caine said.
