Labor plans more green metal industry subsidies

Labor will deploy further taxpayer assistance to energy-intensive industries, taking up calls from business for more generous subsidies to spur manufacturing and bolster sovereign control over key supply chains.

After unions, business and clean energy groups successfully pushed for $2 billion to fund the switch from coal-fired power to renewable energy at Australia’s four aluminium smelters, lobbyists including Australian Industry Group boss Innes Willox said broader support was still needed.
