In Trump’s inflationary American dream, cheap does not mean good

Trump’s treasury secretary backs the president’s trade war even if it worsens the cost-of-living squeeze on ordinary Americans.

After the highest global inflation in more than three decades, every nation’s treasurer or finance minister is keen to get consumer prices down. Except in Donald Trump’s America.

“Access to cheap goods is not the essence of the American dream,” Trump’s Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent declared late last week.
