Trump reaching out to Putin is no ‘reverse Nixon’

The Pollyannish claim that the US president is playing diplomatic chess to isolate Russia from China is a fantasy.

In the first years of Russia’s war on Ukraine, Chinese President Xi Jinping looked on in horror, not because he thought the invasion was wrong, but because he worried his friend, President Vladimir Putin, might lose.

In that respect, Putin has acted as a brake on Xi’s own territorial ambitions, a reminder that no matter how ready Beijing might think its military is to take Taiwan, it could all turn to dust in an instant.
