Winners and losers from the Aussie dollar’s near five-year low

There’s something strange going on with the currency. Expect expensive overseas trips, takeover activity, more foreign buyers in the real estate market and a federal budget boost.

The Australian dollar’s slump against the US greenback to around levels last recorded in the 2020 pandemic and 2008 global financial crisis has a lot of people talking.

With the Aussie hovering around US62¢ since December, Australians are finding it more expensive to travel overseas, while foreign travellers are taking advantage of their bigger spending power here, travel agents say.
