Will Victorian budget avert a full-blown debt crisis?

Jacinta Allan’s government has previously shown an inclination to tax its way out of trouble rather than tackle structural spending problems.

No other state wears the title of economic problem child quite like Victoria, which is staring down the barrel of a serious financial predicament ahead of Tuesday’s budget. Global ratings agencies have now put the Victorian Labor government on notice: rein in spending, find savings and slash debt or face another credit rating downgrade.

But hopes that Premier Jacinta Allan and new treasurer Jaclyn Symes will chart a path to fiscal responsibility are fading, as the government’s pre-budget political narrative raises more questions than it answers.
