Labour market tight, but wages growth will be gradual

In-demand hospitality and tourism workers clocked up a 3.4 per cent pay rise in 2021 thanks to the tight labour market and a delayed increase in the minimum award wage for workers in that sector.

Hospitality was a bright spot in an otherwise underwhelming result for the three months to December 31, which underlined Reserve Bank of Australia governor Philip Lowe’s view that pay rises would be gradual.
