Uproar over RBA deputy’s speech reveals a lot about Australia

What was supposed to be a measured commentary on economic uncertainty ended up offending economists, politicians and commentators. But did they miss the point?

Andrew Hauser would have had no idea of the controversy he was about to generate when he stepped up to the lectern at a Brisbane hotel last week.

But the Reserve Bank of Australia deputy governor, who began the job in February, would have soon realised the speech had touched a nerve with economists and political commentators.
