Shona Joy Thatcher is so media-shy that most of her customers don’t even realise there is a real woman behind the eponymous brand.

“I’ll sometimes have to give my email address at a store,” she says, “and the sales assistant will say, ‘Do you know there’s a brand called Shona Joy?’ ”
