US President Donald Trump got at least one thing right when he declared this week that his imposition of wide-ranging tariffs would be one of the most important days in American history.

“Liberation day”, as Trump calls it, will go down in history as the day that American leadership of the global trading system died, with drastic consequences for economies around the world.
