The fruits of productivity reform wait for bolder politics

It’s said that politics has changed since the golden age of reform in the 1980s and 1990s. But that’s all the more reason to make the effort that seems lacking now.

It was puzzling not to hear the word “productivity” mentioned by the Treasurer when he presented a budget last month that is essentially predicated on it. That is, a budget delivering unprecedented deficits and debt, the sustainability of which depends on the proposition that Australia will grow itself out of debt.

Australia’s lagging performance makes the need for reform even greater.
