The 2021 census showed an Australia spending less of their bigger pay packets on rents and mortgages, but the prospect of rising rates and widespread inflation threaten to undermine households’ financial comfort before the next milestone survey.

On census night in August 2021, the Reserve Bank of Australia’s official cash rate was still at a record low 0.1 per cent and Australians had not experienced a rate rise since November 2010.
