Economists and politicians have accused the Reserve Bank of Australia of hypocrisy after deputy governor Andrew Hauser labelled economic commentators “false prophets” whose poor predictions could make people worse off.

The unusually blunt remarks from the RBA’s second-in-charge highlight the central bank’s exasperation with continuing criticism of its approach to setting interest rates during the current episode of high inflation.
