How execs slay the horror ‘sandwich’ of work, kids and ageing parents

When Matthew Miller’s father was diagnosed with cancer last year, the Australia Post sales and people leader spent most Fridays driving the two hours from Sydney’s inner west to Newcastle, where his dad was undergoing treatment in hospital. He would collect his father and drive a further two hours to Gloucester, so his dad could be home with Miller’s mother, and on Mondays, drop him back to the hospital on his way to Sydney.

“I’ve done about 27,000 kilometres in the last year,” says Miller, a father to two primary-aged children. “I’ve done business meetings in petrol stations and car parks. It’s a bit of additional planning and stress around how to manage life, which I guess you don’t see coming.”
