Stench of malpractice in Victoria and NSW

Despite the anti-corruption body findings, there are still grey areas in how best to protect public integrity.

It was impossible to match Premier Daniel Andrews’ indignation at the industrialised Victorian Labor branch stacking detailed by the Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission this week. “Shameful”, “deplorable” and “disgusting” were his words.

Like Casablanca’s Captain Renault, “shocked to find that gambling is going on in here”, Mr Andrews admitted in private evidence that he was aware of the broad existence of branch stacking – in the culture of a state party he’s led for 12 years – despite telling the public how distressed he was when it was finally exposed by The Australian Financial Review owner Nine Entertainment’s The Age and 60 Minutes.
