Treasurer Jim Chalmers is under pressure to scrap his plan to eliminate his power to override the RBA, after two former governors and former treasurer Peter Costello came out in favour of retaining the federal government’s veto over interest rates.

The independent review of the RBA last year recommended that the section 11 veto power in the Reserve Bank Act be removed to guarantee the independence of the central bank.
