Inflation figures make or break for pre-election rate cut

Consumer price figures due this week are expected to show underlying inflation fell to a three-year low last quarter, in a make-or-break set of data that will be decisive for the Albanese government’s re-election prospects.

Analysts say December quarter inflation figures out on Wednesday will determine whether the Reserve Bank of Australia delivers a pre-election cash rate cut at its first meeting of the year on February 18.
