Guy Debelle is standout candidate to be next RBA governor
The treasurer should appoint arguably the finest policy economist of his generation – someone with central banking skills without peer.
Peter DownesEconomistThe treasurer is about to make a decision on the governorship of the RBA. Speculation is rife about what that choice might be, and little wonder. There has rarely been a more challenging time for the Bank or a more important choice to be made. Of those in the field for the governorship, former deputy governor Guy Debelle really stands out (to me at least). Let me explain why and tell you what I know about him.
I first met Guy when he arrived in Treasury circa 1988, a star student, athlete (and punk rocker) from the University of Adelaide. You could tell right away that he was exceptional. He was extremely bright and hard working (and also known for getting around with his shirt hanging out – someone apparently more interested in ideas than appearances).
