A $23m facelift has made NZ’s most famous holiday lodge even more luxe

Huka Lodge has had a face lift, transforming the old, Scottish hunting theme into a more modern, elegant retreat that takes in the country’s great outdoors.

Huka Lodge, on the Waikato River, has come a long way from its days as a hunting lodge. 

It is not often that a hotel renovation has a nation holding its breath. But the $NZ25 million ($23m) refurbishment of New Zealand’s most famous property, Huka Lodge, was a hot topic during its year-long closure.

Would the makeover by its new owners, Baillie Lodges, render the century-old property unrecognisable? Or would New Zealand’s original luxury retreat still offer the same intimate experience loved by rock stars and royals alike?
