El Nino, fuel costs could help push rates higher, economists warn

Economists are concerned that surging oil prices, a spike in grocery costs and a battered Australian dollar could fuel an unwelcome acceleration in inflation, pushing the Reserve Bank to lift interest rates once again.

Only two economists out of 42 respondents in The Australian Financial Review’s quarterly survey expect the central bank to lift the cash rate on Tuesday from 4.1 per cent, the first policy meeting under new governor Michele Bullock.
