How Virgil Abloh’s death caused prices to spike from IKEA to Mercedes

The late artistic director for menswear at Louis Vuitton made a statement no matter what, or for whom, he was designing.

Since the end of November, I’ve been tracking the price of IKEA rugs. Not that I’ve a sudden penchant for the granola hues of stock models with names such as Vonsbäk, Videbäk or Burpbäk (OK, I made that last one up) retailing for about $200.

More that, since November, the secondary market has been abuzz with floor coverings designed by Virgil Abloh for the Swedish homewares giant in 2018, prices of which flambéed after his death from cardiac angiosarcoma that month, aged 41.
