A banking industry levy to share the cost of providing rural banking services could still be on the cards if the Albanese government is re-elected, after the Federal Treasury made a request to regional banks for detailed cost data.
This would be a blow to some of the major banks, which have been closing regional branches in recent years in favour of an expanded digital offering.
