Consumers will be able to switch banks with a few mouse clicks

Banks, energy utilities and telcos have been put on notice the government will push forward with powerful changes to the consumer data right to give customers the ability to switch providers with a few clicks of a mouse, despite banks’ calls for the extension to be delayed.

The Albanese government has introduced legislation to add an “action initiation” power to the consumer data right, a regulated data-sharing regime. At present, take-up of the CDR in banking (the first sector to adopt it) has been low, in part because it only allows data recipients to look at data, which has limited use.
