This champion country pub has it all: sunny outdoor dining, frosty beers on tap, pool table, even a kelpie at the door with his eyes fixed firmly on a tennis ball. Built in 1903 and restored with care by co-owners Matt Rabbidge and Luke Sullivan in 2019, it now also has big-city escapee Alanna Sapwell-Stone in the kitchen. The chef is smart enough to dish up crowd-pleasers such as fish’n’chips and a mighty burger, while also putting the best local produce to good use in more unique dishes such as a full-bodied wild boar ragu with paccheri pasta, or upside-down banana pudding with butterscotch sauce and cream. Check out the specials board for hibachi-charred bonito with the lemoniest, butteriest sauce, or butterfly profiteroles stuffed with Davidson plum jam. A magical country pub that’s worth a detour, now more than ever.
