Sails on the Bay

No pressure, lovers. But over the years there have been numerous diamond rings delivered to tables at this oh-so-romantic bayside restaurant. And why not? Crisp white linen, padded chairs, fine glassware, and floating roof sails are a backdrop for unrestricted beachside views through wide windows. The food is equally polished. Teriyaki tuna entree comes rare alongside a snappy green bean salad with boiled egg, and a separate mix of potato, olive and tomato. Some small share plates, like warm octopus salad, or pork belly with kimchi and chilli jam, might miss the mark but mains are a strong suit. Try flavoursome, fat hapuku fillet glazed in miso, say, surrounded by creamy sesame dressing, and crowned with a bright mix of cucumber ribbons, herbs and lotus root. Finish with a decadent chocolate macaroon stack with coconut delice and sour cherry sorbet. Sometimes service may be more relaxed than prices suggest, but the view - and perhaps that diamond ring - is hard to beat.
