A Beerwah man who was jailed with his father over their roles in a violent failed car theft was caught using the credit cards of an elderly pensioner in the lead up to his violent crimes, a court has heard.

Tarik James Tyson and his father Ronald James Tyson were involved in a botched vehicle steal at Beerwah which resulted in a woman being assaulted.

Maroochydore District Court heard back in October how the pair used violence to try and flee when they were caught “red handed” in the vehicle. They were overpowered by residents in the street until police arrived.

The pair both pleaded guilty to assault while in company, unlawful entry of a vehicle with violence in company and receiving tainted property.

The 24-year-old pleaded guilty to an additional charge of possessing a dangerous drug, and was jailed for nine months with immediate parole eligibility.

In Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Wednesday, defence lawyer Luke Bull said there were additional charges which needed to be finalised from the incident and in the week prior.

Tyson pleaded guilty to several charges including fraud, receiving tainted property, possessing a knife and failing to dispose of a syringe while on video link from prison.

Police prosecutor Tara Miles said the fraud victim was a 70-year-old Pelican Waters man, who had his car broken into on April 23 last year where he had a number of cards stolen.

Senior Constable Miles said the victim made inquiries where he discovered unauthorised transactions the next day at McDonald’s Currimundi and Liberty Fuel Bokarina.

Police investigations identified Tyson’s car at the service station. The 24-year-old was later picked up and found with the 70-year-old man’s RSL card.

Senior Constable Miles said Tyson was also searched on April 30 at the botched attempted car theft where he was found with items which included syringes and a six inch knife.

Mr Bull said Tyson was already sentenced in the district court and was serving jail time. He asked for parole eligibility for the 24-year-old.

Magistrate Rod Madsen sentenced Tyson to three months jail with immediate parole eligibility.
