A man has been flown to a Brisbane hospital with critical injuries after a ute headed the opposite direction possibly swerved to avoid hitting a kangaroo and collided with another vehicle.

Emergency crews were rushed to the scene of the crash, at the Old Bruce Hwy near its intersection with Sankeys Rd, about 6am at Federal, 25km south of Gympie.

A police spokeswoman said initial investigations indicated the Toyota Hilux collided with the Skoda Karoq, with reports of a kangaroo on the road.

A Queensland Ambulance Services spokeswoman said three men, aged in their 20s, were seriously injured in the crash.

A LifeFlight spokeswoman said the driver of the Skoda, a 21-year-old Brisbane man, was treated for serious leg, pelvic and facial injuries.
