A popular brewery is on the cusp of sharing two exciting new beers in a “tongue-in-cheek nod” to an Australian favourite, in what’s a healthy sign for the Sunshine Coast craft beer industry.

10 Toes Brewing will unveil two new brews from their Buderim base of operations in June which will mark the first commissioned beers for the new expansion site.

Owners Rupert Hall and his wife launched 10 Toes Brewing at Alexandra Headland in 2016, before they jumped at the chance of their Buderim site following the closure of the local IGA in 2022.

The business owners were able to swing open their doors in late 2023, and after several months of gestation, will unleash two new beers which will be available in cans and on tap.

Mr Hall said it was exciting to be up and running with the brew house after some initial challenges, but was glad Buderim was finally a brew house which was brewing beer.

One particular beer which will be released is a nod to their leafy green second venue, being called the “Great Northern Buderim” lager.

“The first two brews are seasonal, so the first one [Great Northern Buderim Lager] has its nuances … with a fairly crisp and dry, malty note,” Mr Hall said.

“We’ve thrown hops at it in weird and wonderful ways, and that’ll come in at 4.7 per cent.”

Mr Hall said the second brew, which was unnamed at time of publication, was more of an American amber ale stacking in a 6 per cent.

He said the first beer’s name was a “tongue-in-cheek” nod to the iconic beer brand Great Northern, while also a tribute to the suburb of Buderim where the second venue is based.

The owner said there was also another seasonal release in the works, however kept tight-lipped on details besides to say it was in “IPA territory”.

Mr Hall said it was a “lengthy process” to get to the launch of their two new beers following a material change of use application to Sunshine Coast Council which was relatively smooth.

They hoped to brew in November 2023 but other challenges arose which included access and cost to trades along with minor defect and equipment supply issues which were remedied.

Another stinging point was the closure of the Bunker Smokehouse, a Gympie-based business that originally was working the kitchen at the Buderim brewery.

It was reported the business went into voluntary liquidation in February, with its parent company The Dangleys Ptd Ltd being saddled with more than $400,000 debt when it was wound up.

Since their closure Mr Hall said they’ve taken on the kitchen with a fresh approach and received a positive reception.

He said there was a large amount of interest once the Buderim venue opened however since then Mr Hall said punters were “trying to find out what their new local is”.

“You’ve got two sites with two different personalities,” he said.

“Buderim has definitely been picking up its followers locally, with consumer awareness for craft beers still in its infancy everywhere.

“Over the last few months though it’s just been growing week on week.”

The new 10 Toes beers only adds to the positive news coming out of the Sunshine Coast for local breweries in the past 12 months.

Moffat Beach Brewing Co claimed the top gong of Australia’s best beer in the annual RNA Royal Queensland Beer Awards in March, being named the Grand Champion Beer of Show with their Trilogy Best Coast IPA.

A new microbrewery is also pending approval by council at Marcoola by Young Giants Brewing Ltd, directed and founded by Sunshine Coast acupuncturist Matt Ford and Chris Geddes.

Coolum Beer also enjoyed a warm welcoming in late 2023 following the opening of their brewery at the industrial estate in Coolum Beach, while Heads of Noosa continue to turn heads after hiring Peregian Beach resident Jack Brew as their chief beer testing officer, while also pushing forward with a new video advertising campaign.

10 Toes Brewery at Buderim will hold a launch party on June 1 from 5pm to 8pm.
