The hunt to find readers’ choice as the best pub feed in Gympie has ended with a clear cut favourite backed by almost one quarter of the competition’s respondents. See the top three choises:

The Mt Pleasant Hotel as been voted by Gympie Times readers the best pub feed in Gympie with almost one quarter of respondents supporting them from a field of 14 popular venues around town.

Pub co-owner Orranout Kidd expressed her gratitude for being voted number one in the region saying “we’re very surprised and happy, it’s an honour to be on top”.

She said the must-try items on their menu are everything seafood and steak, with the Seafood Chowder is the most popular item on the menu.

“Bill is the cook and built everything up for us,” Mrs Kidd said.

“He said it’s hard to get a good steak and seafood, so lots of people come in for that.”

The Hotel’s 24 per cent vote share made it the top choice among readers, with its closest competition among readers the Gympie Sports Club (13 per cent the vote) and the Woolooga Hotel and Victory Hotel each tying for third place with 9 per cent.

Located on Mount Pleasant Road in Gympie, the pub was originally created for the hardworking gold miners in the region as a place to unwind after a long days work. Being established in 1868, it is the oldest pub in Gympie and is the third oldest in Queensland

156 years later, the pub is still a favourite place to visit for the community to unwind after a long day.

For the past 20 years up, Mt Pleasant Hotel has been a family owned business that is managed by brothers Bill, Ian, and Rob Kidd, including Mrs Kidd, and the dedicated General Manager, Tracey Cooper.

Mrs Kidd said the hotel was adding Christmas menus to their kitchen and invited everyone to try their roast dinners and Christmas pudding, whether you’re eating for one or a large group of people.

Those who missed the Hotel’s Christmas feast would have the chance to catch it again at its 2025 Christmas in July festivities.

Mrs Kidd said the pub’s success came down to being a small business that focused on being family-friendly pub where everyone felt welcome and comfortable.

She said the many positive reviews of the pub highlighted its great service, extensive bar selection, the live music and pool tables, and fabulous value for money.

They were always aiming to preserve the history of the pub and keep consistent with what they offered because the community loved it so much.

“We are so proud of everything,” Mrs Kidd said.

“We still keep everything the same by keeping the charm of the mining history, and keep it nice and inviting.”
