A man with a string of assaults on his record has been told to keep his hands to himself after punching and kicking police during his latest arrest.
Reginald John Marshall pleaded guilty at Gympie Magistrates Court to two counts of assault after he resisted arrest when police picked him up on another matter on April 4, 2025.
Defence lawyer Chris Anderson said the 60-year-old from Middle Ridge near Toowoomba, left school at age 14 and held jobs as a mechanic, in a laundry, and unloading trucks throughout his life.
He had been on the Disability Support pension since about 2000, the court heard.
Mr Anderson told the court this was the result of “drug and alcohol psychoses”.
“Alcohol has been an issue throughout his life,” Mr Anderson said.
Magistrate Bevan Hughes said the latest offences added to what was already a five page-long criminal history which included “numerous” convictions for various assaults.
These included a conviction in November 2024 for serious assault of a person aged over 60 for which he was handed a nine month jail term.
He was on parole for those offences when he was arrested.
“The first thing I’ll tell you is you need to learn to keep your hands to yourself,” Mr Hughes said.
Marshall was sentenced to nine months’ jail, suspended for two years, with immediate parole eligibility.
