The family of a 17-year-old boy left fighting for his life after a horror crash that killed his 21-year-old girlfriend have launched a fundraising campaign for his medical bills.
GoFundMe campaign organiser Benjamin Thompson said his older brother Jake was severely injured in the crash that killed Shaylee Woods at Gilldora about 14km south of Gympie on Friday, July 18.
Jake was driving a blue Ford ute along the Mary Valley Hwy when it collided head-on with a white Holden Colorado about 11.45am.
Tragically, Ms Woods, from Victory Heights, died at the scene.
A 67-year-old man from Redbank Plains, who was driving the Holden, was taken to Gympie Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
In the fundraising campaign Benjamin said his brother was “severely injured and he is currently fighting for his life in the Royal Brisbane Hospital”, where he was flown from the scene of the crash.
“Jake was a bit of a hard ass but he always cared for all of us and helped us even if it was the littlest of things, no matter what kind of day he was having or what has happened to him he always put everyone else first,” Benjamin said in the fundraising post.
“Jake isn’t just some average kid, he’s done more for our friends and family then he has and ever will on himself.
“Most people would remember him for his stubborn personality and enthusiasm with helping others. He has a big heart and he is a great big bother to me.
He said Jake had moved out of home and in to a place with friends, supporting himself and “helping them out every chance he can”.
The fundraiser was for Jake’s medical bills as well as travel costs between Gympie and Brisbane.
“We have a long road ahead of us and any and all help will be greatly appreciated.”
A fundraiser was launched on Saturday for Ms Woods’s funeral costs.
