A 21-year-old Gympie farmhand was charged with obstructing a police officer after his girlfriend was arrested during his 21st birthday celebrations at the Queenslander Hotel in June.

Leeham George James Hatchman pleaded guilty in Gympie Magistrates Court on Monday to obstructing a police officer, possessing marijuana and possessing meth.

Police prosecutor Michael Phillips said police were called to a disturbance at the Queenslander Hotel in Mary St on June 19, where they arrested a woman who had been kicked out of the pub.

Sgt Phillips said Hatchman was also present, and the woman being arrested was his girlfriend.

“At this time the defendant has attempted to grab the arrested woman...and told police she was not under arrest,” he said.

Despite being warned about his behaviour, Hatchman continued to argue and was arrested for obstructing police.

Sgt Phillips also said Hatchman was visibly intoxicated, slurring his words and failing to follow simple instructions.

Defence lawyer Chris Anderson told the court his client was celebrating his 21st birthday at the Queenslander Hotel, and was trying to calm down his girlfriend after she was kicked out of the pub.

Hatchman was placed on 12 months probation with 40 hours of community service, and placed in a $300 good behaviour bond for four months.

No conviction was recorded.
