A teenager who picked up a brick at a caravan park and used it to smash a window in the room where he was staying was later busted with a knife when he attended the police station.
Bradley Alan Barton, 19, pleaded guilty to wilful damage and possessing a knife in a public place when he faced Maryborough Magistrates Court.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Balam Selvadurai said on September 20, Barton had been staying in a room at the Wallace Motel and Caravan Park.
About 8.25pm, Barton left the room, walked to the barbecue area and picked up a large brick.
He walked back to his room and at 8.38pm he threw the brick from within his room, shattering a window, Sgt Selvadurai said.
Barton then opened his door and began yelling that someone had smashed his window, causing the guests in the other rooms to come outside to see what had happened.
Barton had later attended the police station to talk to the police about the incident.
While speaking to him, police located a knife in his left pants pocket.
Barton was taken to the watch-house for medical reasons and an ambulance was called, Sgt Selvadurai said.
He said Barton had no criminal history.
Duty lawyer Warren Hunter said Barton was receiving a disability pension and his support worker was supporting in court.
Barton had ADHD and autism he said, and he was unable to explain his actions that night at the caravan park.
Mr Hunter said to his credit, Barton had paid $200 towards fixing the window and $90 was remaining to be paid.
Magistrate John Milburn said he could not quite understand why Barton did what he did.
But he said Barton had been easily apprehended and he had acknowledged his guilt.
“Leading up to today you have made proactive steps to reimburse the victim of the wilful damage,” he said.
“That’s a significant matter because it does go to genuine remorse and genuine insight.”
Barton was sentenced to a $600 good behaviour bond, to be in place for a period of six months.
No convictions were recorded.
