6am Strong black coffee and a couple of glasses of water to start my day, then 10 to 15 minutes of stretches before answering some emails. It’s all systems go in the final weeks before SXSW Sydney kicks off. Later, a slice of tasty grain toast with Vegemite and avocado.

7.30am Another glass of water.

9.15am Black coffee number two and an apple.

2.30pm I am not too hungry today, so I grab a banana between meetings.

7pm Tonight it’s leftovers from last night’s yummy dinner: roast chicken with olive oil, white wine, lemon and light seasoning. We eat this with fresh steamed vegies: broccolini, carrots, zucchini.

Dr Joanna McMillan says

Top marks for… Your dinner, being the only substantial meal of the day, providing your sole source of high-quality protein from the chicken and including the only vegies.

If you keep eating like this you’ll… Fail to meet your requirements for many nutrients, including protein, calcium – particularly important at your age for bone health – iron, zinc, B vitamins, omega-3s, and fibre for gut health. In essence, this day does not have enough food for optimal nutrition.

Why don’t you try… Getting more protein and nutrients into the day by adding eggs to breakfast, slicing your banana into Greek yoghurt, snacking on a can of tuna with wholegrain crackers or whipping up a smoothie with fruit, leafy greens and either milk or a scoop of protein powder.

Fenella Kernebone is the head of programming for SXSW Sydney, which runs from October 14-20.
